The conference and exhibition are held from September 17 – 19, 2012. With the theme ‘Enabling Geo-Governance’, the Forum aims to highlight the issues and challenges in mainstreaming geospatial information into national development practice as an effective solution to the rapid urbanization issue faced by Asian countries. The conference agenda comprised topical issues such as land administration, forest management, disaster management and utilities and transportation.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Duc - Vice Minister of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the use of geospatial information to support the decision making is to be conducted not only at national scale but also at regional dimension. The integration of Governmental Agencies with Industry of Spatial Technology (including Geospatial Information Technology) has been becoming an essential demand. Vietnamese Government is paying the manifestation of special interest for developing the research and application of space technology in order to service the national socio-economic development targets, the disaster resilience and mitigation in context of climate change.

The initiative of Vietnam Geodesy Cartography and Remote Sensing Association and Geospatial Media and Communications to co-organize 11th Asia Geospatial Forum in Viet Nam is an opportunity for for decision makers, scientists and universities, engineers and business community to meet and to share the latest achievement in space technology applications for socio-economic development and climate change adaptation and mitigation. The Forum is also an excellent opportunity to identify the challenges in development of the collaboration in research, application and techno-transfer between decision makers, and industrial sector and universities as well as the spatial information user’s community.

According to Kavitha – Regional Manager, Geospatial industry in this region is at an exciting stage of its development. Geospatial technology is growing, new companies are emerging and established ones are expanding. It has been such a powerful and useful tool that many disciplines ranging from infrastructure projects to forest management to agriculture, all have benefited from its application. Spatial data is an essential component for planning projects across industry verticals for nation development. Today, the government is facing various challenges such as growth in population, environmental concerns, resource shortages… Driven by the increasing need to overcome these challenges and given the immense potential of geospatial technology, the government is increasing investments for spatial data implementation in land use planning, asset management, utility management, incident mapping, inspections, resource exploration and national security. Geospatial technology is to become the mainstream application around all the sectors in this region, especially in Viet Nam.

One of the most importances of the event is to honor the Asia Geospatial Excellence Awards. This year six applications that deserve recognition in the region. The conference comprised forums, sections and exhibition which are the biggest gathering of international geospatial community in Vietnam comprising of geospatial professionals and practitioners across the globe which gave the participation of good chance for exchanging and updating related information of the field by various local and international organizations.
